Just wondering about some different Practice patterns good for throwing in some Hip Hop style beats. I saw Zoro a couple of years back and he was incorporating some cool Hip Hop things into some funbk grooves.

    Thanks.

I don't know about hip hop, but I absolutely love jungle and drum'n'bass drumming (such as in JoJo Mayer's NERVE). If you're interested in that, check out the Johnny Rabb book titled "Jungle/Drum'n'Bass Drumming (for the Acoustic Drum Set)."

This is a fusion drum board. You should go over to the Puff Daddy forums. LOL

Superimpose a 6/8 feel over 2/4 and play around by going back and forth in the time rates. Then settle in a swung 16th hip hop groove.

Also, check out the chorus of Destiny's Child "Say My Name" It has some great 32nd note groove/riffs. Then listen to the BrandX track "Mental Floss" off Xcommunication. Frank Katz does a mean 32nd note groove on it.

Bob, I find agnostics & hari-krishnas on a rotisserie [w a little dash of mojo &/or Worchestershire] to be of a much better flavor...

    Try:
-listening to ALOT of hip hop.Practice to it.There are some nuances with the production that can be fun to emulate(like 'stalls',or breaking up the time with breakbeats). There's a history of hip hop beats that on can add to the vocabulary.eg:that Destiny's Child track was from 97.That was when Timbaland and Swiss Beatz were infusing alot of Drum'n'Bass flourishes into their programming. Now it is regarded as a stock feel to use on a track.

-program your drum machine.Play with it.Program what you hear on recordings.Adjust the swing value.

-Get Dj Shadows'Endtroducing'.Super cool take on hip hop rhythms.
    -ditch your toms.

There's alot of interesting stuff out there to cop.Ironically a good majority of those beats were sampled feels from Bernard Purdie,Gadd,Bonham,Dennis and a whole litany of other drummers.Additionally producers would try tom program thier drumachine of choice to emulate the funk records they love.

theres nothing freakier2 B-boys/Bgirls than seeing a live drummer playing hip hop beats.

Same can be said of headz seeing a drummer roll out d'n'b beats at 175bpms.

I get paid to do that kind of a thing.

    Im a junglist......er drummer........beats.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Nicely said Beats! The feels that be created with an MPC are just ridiculous. By adjusting the swing value, you can create insane grooves where the snare feels sooo late it's killing. you MUST check out the programming on D'Angelo's Voodoo.
